Commission extends Lake Wanahoo borrow pit operation to Dec. 31, 2027, directs closure and project closeouts

The Nebraska Natural Resources Commission on April 29 approved the Lower Platte North Natural Resources District’s request to continue operating the existing borrow pit at Lake Wanahoo through Dec. 31, 2027, with an option to continue through 2029. The agreement includes returning 60% of total borrow-pit revenue to the Resources Development Fund and requires that the area be re-graded and reseeded to original native grasses after closure.
Commissioner Tom Mountford provided background on Lake Wanahoo and the partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and LPNNRD. Commissioner Don Batie moved to approve the request and Mountford seconded. The motion passed (recorded vote totals show 16 yes, 0 no, 2 abstain, 6 absent). After discussion, the Commission also directed its Program Committee to begin working with RDF project sponsors to close out all remaining projects by the end of 2027 and requested sponsors who cannot meet that deadline be invited to update the Committee or Commission.
The action combines both near-term operational authorization for the borrow pit and a timeline for broader RDF project closure activities. Staff will implement the closure condition and monitor sponsor progress toward the year-end close-out goal.
