Planning commission approves short extension to relocate two temporary classrooms for school construction

The North Las Vegas Planning Commission approved a request to relocate two temporary portable classroom buildings at 1201 East Cary Avenue to provide classroom space during ongoing school construction.
Staff presented SUP 37-20-24 and recommended approval of the applicant’s first extension request, noting the original permit allowed one year and two extensions may be granted for a maximum three-year term. Kip Barton, representing the applicant, said the relocated portables are intended to serve the 2026–2027 school year and “to house another 100 students” while the final phase of the school is completed. Barton told commissioners the existing portables occupy the area slated for phase 4 construction and will be moved to the northwest corner of the site so classrooms remain available during work.
Commissioners asked about the timeline and reiterated that the extension is limited. Commissioner Vida asked directly how long the portables would be used; Barton replied they are intended for 2026 and 2027 only. Commissioner Greer moved the staff-recommended approval; the commission approved the motion by voice vote.
The approval carries conditions listed in the staff report; staff said unresolved building-permit and site-compliance items will be addressed during the permit process. The item will be recorded as SUP 37-20-24 in city records.
