On second reading, Council passed Ordinance 63-26 to amend the citys Voluntary Early Retirement Incentive Program (VERIP). HR representative Miss Bradford explained the change was needed to correct a date discrepancy and to permit a one-time increased payment in a narrow case: language now allows the mayor, with auditor authorization, to approve an additional payment not to exceed $10,000 in addition to the base incentive, for a maximum of $20,000.
Councilor Lowe and others questioned the size of the incentive; Lowe said she felt $10,000 was insufficient for some employees and pressed for clarity on who would determine payout amounts. Miss Bradford said the change was narrowly drafted to help an individual retiree who otherwise would have lost retirement-eligibility time and that the change preserves a $20,000 cap and the mayors authority. The ordinance passed on second reading by an 8to0 recorded vote.
Next steps: Ordinance 63-26 is enacted following second reading; HR will administer payments within the adopted caps.
