Chief Alan Moore briefed the committee on a multi-alarm residential fire that occurred on March 1. He said the incident was investigated and staff concluded the fire started from coals and embers left from a barbecue, and that neighboring properties experienced minor exposure damage.
Chief Moore credited rapid response and mutual aid from Olathe, noting crews sometimes had to cut through backyards to access the rear of structures because heat prevented passage between houses. He also said the department is conducting nondestructive training drills in an acquired structure slated for demolition near 190th and Antioch to practice search-and-rescue, coordinated ventilation and hose-line deployment.
The committee commended crews for their work and noted the utility of joint training opportunities with nearby agencies.
