Board to compile evidence after investigators flag unlicensed athletic coverage in Washoe County schools

Investigator Dustin Hopfe said he is collecting documentation and testimony from certified athletic trainers and plans to interview the individuals in question before the Board issues any formal enforcement letter to the district.
Executive Secretary Michelle Cothrun recommended beginning with an educational letter clarifying the legal definition of “athletic trainer” under Nevada Revised Statutes and emphasizing compliance before escalating to formal enforcement. Hopfe told the Board he would compile evidence and coordinate with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) to clarify site coverage during events. The Board did not take immediate enforcement action and directed staff to return the matter to a future agenda after investigators complete their evidence-gathering.
