The Midland City Council approved a resolution to purchase an Elgin Broom Bear single‑engine street sweeper for $431,425 as a replacement for a 12‑year‑old unit. Fleet staff said this will be the fleet’s third sweeper and that staff considered used units and cooperative purchasing options before the recommendation.
Resident Shandy Williams, who registered to speak on the item, urged the city to put sweepers to work in residential neighborhoods rather than only on major corridors. "With this $431,000 investment, are we going to put anything in place that we actually utilize these sweepers in the residential areas?" Williams asked. Fleet staff said the city sweeps collector and residential roadways annually and supplements those efforts with a contractor that sweeps major arterial roadways at least twice per year; staff also said they keep mileage and utilization logs and could provide utilization data to the council on request. The council voted to approve the purchase (6–0).
