City animal-control staff presented the March 2026 shelter report, noting 97 intakes (52 dogs, 39 cats, 6 other) and 86 outcomes for the month. "In the month of March, we received a very generous donation through the VCA Charities Foundation and Royal Canins that donated 10 pallets of dog food...This was over almost 10,000 pounds of dog food that we were able to distribute to the community," the presenter (Omar) said.
Omar reported three deaths in the shelter during March (two euthanasias—one for severe illness and one for rabies testing—and one death during surgery/complications) and a live-release rate of about 97% overall (94% for dogs, 100% for cats). Council members asked for clarification about the cause of the severe illness and were told the staff did not have that detail off the top of their head. Staff noted that rabies testing is required by state law when an animal with no vaccination history bites or severely scratches a person.
