Council approves demolition of rear structure at 909 West 16th

The Board of Minimum Housing approved an order to demolish the collapsing rear structure on the property at 909 West 16th (case MH2602). Philip Mize, the city’s chief building official, described a collapsed ceiling and extensive rot and said the rear building on the lot has begun to fall in on itself; staff had performed title work, attached violation notices in November 2025 and filed a hearing notice after 30 days of no compliance. “The staff's recommendation at 909 West 16th, the rear building only, be demolished and an order demolish demolition order issued for the structure and removal at the property owner's expense,” Mize said.
The mayor opened the public hearing at 6:51 p.m.; no one came forward and the hearing was closed at 6:52 p.m. Councilmember House moved to approve the order and Councilmember Rascon seconded; the clerk announced “We have a vote of 7 4” in the transcript and the mayor stated the vote was unanimous. Staff said the city will proceed with demolition at the owner's expense if the owner does not mitigate the nuisance.
