Midlothian launches MED primary job expansion grant for exporting small businesses

Economic development staff described a new MED local primary job expansion program aimed at helping Midlothian businesses that export products or services. Staff said grants would be capped at $50,000 per business over the lifetime of the program, require a minimum $10,000 investment and exclude home-based businesses; the program also requires businesses to be located in appropriate commercial zoning and fall within eligible NAICS sectors set by state law.
Kyle, who presented the program, said the Economic Development Board will review applications and make findings about whether a project's activity serves the region. "These grants will be available up to $50,000 for the lifetime of this program," Kyle said. Council members asked follow-up questions about NAICS eligibility, the definition of 'export outside the region' and oversight; staff said 'region' is not defined in the local government code and that the board will make project-by-project determinations. The council approved the program 7–0.
