Extension presenters told the commission that several fairground structures are aging and in poor condition and that a contractor had described at least one building as unsafe.
"He was like, it's not even really safe," Summer Stafford said of a contractor's assessment of the poultry/rabbit barn and adjacent structures. Commissioners and staff discussed two cost ranges that were mentioned in the presentation: one estimate of about $250,000 for a major roof and lean‑to option and other estimates cited as high as $400,000 for more extensive work covering multiple barns.
Presenters recommended rehabilitating two pig barns because they lie closer to the show arena and are more practical for exhibitor use; they said donor leads and grants could help cover capital expenses. County staff reminded the commission that any structural electrical or plumbing work would need planning and zoning review and that formal approval should be sought if the commission selects a work plan that involves county facilities or capital funding.
Commissioners requested updated, itemized cost estimates and suggested a site visit so they could view the buildings before approving any county work.
