Omar said the shelter’s live‑release rate for April was 93 percent overall (93 percent for dogs, 94 percent for cats). He described kitten season pressure and noted two euthanasias during the period due to severe illnesses (one confirmed parvo case and one unknown cause that resulted in a death overnight). Staff described ongoing adoption events, transfers to rescue partners, and opportunities to use the proposed adoption trailer to increase outreach.
Council members thanked shelter staff and asked about staffing and spay/neuter grant opportunities; Omar said the shelter has a staff of eight (with one recent resignation bringing active roster to seven) and that spay/neuter capacity depends on grant funding and veterinary availability. Council offered support for additional outreach and donations (towels, pet food) and asked staff to seek ways to incentivize adoption of larger-breed dogs, which shelter staff identified as an ongoing placement challenge.
Next steps: shelter staff will continue outreach and grant pursuit, provide follow-up on spay/neuter opportunities, and coordinate adoption events with partner organizations.
