The resolution, effective until the commission's first meeting in April (04/06/2026), prohibits open pits and most open burning other than limited exceptions such as propane grills. Captain Braden (Brady) Steckel of the sheriff’s office and the interim fire-investigator explained enforcement: if a violation is found, the sheriff’s office can file an affidavit to proceed in district court rather than issuing immediate citations, and special permits may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Commissioners noted the ban covers both county and city areas within the county and approved the resolution by voice vote (motion passed 5-0). The resolution was described as consistent with past practice during high-risk periods and intended to reduce wildfire risk to residents and property.
