The Seward County Commission approved a budget-neutral restructuring of sheriff’s office pay aimed at reducing deputy turnover.
Commissioners discussed that four deputies have resigned for higher-paying opportunities and several more were pursuing other agencies. The proposal presented to the commission would eliminate two vacant deputy positions and reallocate that budget to raise wages for remaining deputies. The sheriff’s office said that, after the change, the department would have 18 deputies and considered that staffing level "doable." A commissioner asked whether the change set a precedent for other departments; supporters said the action was a retention measure and would still require commission approval if formal raises were sought on other payroll lines.
The motion to approve the restructured pay scale for the Seward County Sheriff’s Department passed by a recorded voice vote, 5-0.
