At the meeting’s public-comment period, Kamal Sodhi urged the Rockwall ISD trustees to change district practice that she said forces student athletes into mandatory unweighted class periods that can lower GPA and class rank. ‘‘No TEA or UIL rule mandates that restriction,’’ Sodhi said, arguing the district is ‘‘simply leveling the playing field downward’’ and recommending a GPA waiver and allowing students to keep earned off periods or take academic classes instead.
Sodhi asked the board to direct administration to consider temporary fallback options immediately for rising juniors and seniors so schedules can be set before the next school year. Trustees acknowledged the comment and said staff would follow up; one trustee noted the Texas Education Agency is working on a statewide GPA process and that more guidance may be forthcoming.
