District finance staff told trustees that as of the October snapshot the district had 19,174 students and the most recent May 1 count was 19,058, a gap that translates to about $3 million in unanticipated revenue shortfall relative to prior projections.
Presenting the budget update, the finance lead explained statewide demographic trends and the new risk posed by Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), which could produce additional student losses next year. "As of our October snapshot date for this current year, we were 19,174 students," the presenter said, noting the district currently projects several multi‑year budget scenarios. Under a low-enrollment projection the district modeled a $3.8 million deficit next year (rising in subsequent years), while a mid-level projection would produce a near‑balanced budget (about a $983,000 projected deficit) after accounting for compensation commitments and anticipated unspent allocations. The presentation included potential mitigations: modest meal-price increases, reviewing after-school fees and sibling discounts, delaying some capital projects, and staff-allocation adjustments that have already surfaced savings.
