County proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention Month; approves Bikes for Tikes fundraiser

Rockwall County Commissioners on April 14 read a proclamation recognizing April 2026 as National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month and heard remarks from local child-welfare organizations about services and needs. Patricia Mejia of the Children's Advocacy Center told the court the center opened for full services in April 2018 and last year served 736 unduplicated children; she described collaborative efforts to reduce revictimization and barriers to disclosure.
The court also approved a request from America's Guardians to host the 11th annual Bikes for Tikes teddy-bear ride on Sept. 20, 2026, at Liberty Hall and the courthouse parking area and to waive associated fees. Michael Meek ("Mad Dog"), president of America's Guardians, said the group's local fundraising has raised more than $500,000 over the past 10 years for the Children's Advocacy Center. Commissioner Galana moved to approve the event and the use of county property; the motion passed on a recorded vote. Agencies in attendance, including the Rainbow Room and Lone Star CASA, urged volunteer recruitment and community support.
