CFO and facilities staff explained the central plant has five chillers (three water chillers and two air chillers); with two beyond repair and one intermittent, the district needs a third functioning chiller before summer to reliably cool campuses. The board approved a Huntington/Hutton Services refurbishment under the Choice Partners cooperative (quoted at approximately $437,000), to be paid from the capital improvement/maintenance note balance. The presenter said the refurbishment includes a five-year parts-and-labor warranty for the control panel and parts availability is limited for older units.
Trustees discussed timing and contingencies: staff said lead time is three to seven weeks and that the district could temporarily rent ancillary chillers if needed during the refurbishment. A motion to approve the contract passed unanimously.
