Council reviews bulk-pickup pilot: truck, staffing and annual schedule explained

City staff presented details of a planned bulk-pickup pilot during the Shaker Heights City Council work session on June 8. Director Farrell said the city expects to receive a custom-built truck by late June or early July and has onboarded one of two employees needed to run the service; the pilot is scheduled for August through October 2026 with a full-season rollout April–October in 2027.
Farrell described the backyard pickup option: two staff will retrieve up to three items from a resident’s backyard (the truck itself will not enter private yards), and pickups will be scheduled Monday through Thursday with residents asked to call three to five days in advance for verification. The city plans multiple sign-up channels, including a phone line and an online form that will allow residents to upload photos and pay online for additional pickups beyond the two free services. Farrell said the city will make outreach through its usual communications outlets, e-news and Shaker Magazine.
Councilmembers praised the plan as responsive to long-standing resident requests. Councilwoman Moore also asked staff to link the outreach materials to outside recycling resources such as FirstEnergy’s refrigerator-pickup incentive and the Cuyahoga Solid Waste District’s searchable resources; Farrell said staff had already contacted some partners and would add additional links to the resident memo.
