Council approves three-year firefighter medical exam contract with Cleveland Clinic

The Shaker Heights City Council voted unanimously May 26 to authorize a three-year personal-services contract with Cleveland Clinic At Work to provide annual medical examinations for the city's firefighters.
Chief Sweeney told council the department issued an RFP and received proposals from the Cleveland Clinic, Summa and Bio Care Inc., and a review panel of fire administration and firefighters recommended the Cleveland Clinic. "We anticipate putting about 57 members of the department through this program right now," Chief Sweeney said, estimating the initial cost at about $58,995. He said the exams follow a wellness-fitness initiative and will include behavioral-health assessments.
Council members said committees had thoroughly reviewed the proposal. "The summary in the memo is very accurate and we just think that wellness programs pay for themselves," Councilwoman Moore said on behalf of Safety and Public Works, noting unanimous committee support. Finance also recommended approval; Ms. Carmela Williams said finance had one question noted in the memo but supported moving forward.
The legislation was passed under suspension of the rules and enacted the same evening. Council did not attach additional conditions in the meeting; staff indicated the program is part of the recent labor agreement requiring annual physicals and that coordination with the clinic will begin promptly.
