Waller County Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation declaring April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month after a presentation by Hilda Martinez of Focusing Families. Martinez reviewed state-level statistics included in her presentation packet and outlined five steps community members can take to prevent sexual and domestic violence, including education, talking about the issue, practicing consent, active bystander intervention, and supporting prevention organizations.
"Texas had the highest number of reported cases with 15,097 reported," Martinez said while citing state data packaged for the court; she urged residents to participate in public-awareness events such as Denim Day and other month-long activities. The court acknowledged the nonprofit's work and discussed financial and operational supports the county provides to local crisis and advocacy services. Commissioners thanked Focusing Families for ongoing outreach and training to law enforcement, volunteers, schools and community groups.
The proclamation was read into the record and approved by the court; the motion carried with standard procedural votes. The county will display the proclamation and the nonprofit said it will provide event dates and materials for county channels.
