Mayor Ken Matthew read a proclamation "The city of Stafford proudly congratulates the North American University NAU men's basketball team on winning the USCAA national championship," signed by the mayor.
Faruk Taban, identified in the meeting as NAU's president, told the council the university has been in Stafford about 10 years and is expanding. "We have overall headcount is 1,500," Taban said, adding that enrollment has doubled over the last seven years and that NAU recently opened a branch in the Galleria area. Athletic director Kenneth Apandy noted the team finished its season 22-8 and "did a great job," describing awards and the players' path to competition. The pair invited council members to NAU events including the May 9 commencement at the Stafford Center.
The council's recognition emphasized NAU's role in workforce development and community partnerships. Councilmembers and attendees praised the university's community contributions and discussed potential collaborations with the Economic Development Corporation and Stafford ISD facilities.
