Health department extends Nashville CARES contract amid concerns about premium increases

Mike Critchfield, legislative liaison for the Department of Health, described an amendment to the state's grant contract with Nashville CARES to extend the end date, add renewal options and additional funds to continue the Ryan White Part B Insurance Assistance Program while a pending RFP is reviewed. He said Nashville CARES manages annual open enrollment for approximately 6,500 enrollees and has been the state's contractor since 2002.
A committee staff member noted that the new contract shows a 40% increase in premiums while inflation has been about 2.5–3%; the staff comment was placed on the record as an indicator of rising insurance costs. After the presentation and no further questions from members, the committee approved the amendment by voice vote.
