Lawmakers press TEMA on Mesonet equipment buy; agency says recurring funds cover installation and maintenance

Representative Bricken told the committee the Mesonet equipment contract structure ‘bothered’ her because it appeared to buy only equipment without accounting for installation, calibration and ongoing maintenance. “This contract bothered me, primarily... it doesn't include the installation costs or the annual maintenance of this program,” she said, seeking clarity on storage, calibration and lifecycle costs for the stations.
Director Patrick Sheehan and meteorologist Meghan Shragaratsky responded that installation and maintenance are included in the recurring $1,300,000 line in TEMA's budget and that the department plans to pursue partners through future RFPs or MOUs to assist with installation and maintenance. Sheehan emphasized a long history of advocating for a statewide Mesonet as a backbone for flash‑flood warnings and said the agency will store equipment in state warehouses and work with state properties and local partners for siting.
