During Parks & Recreation business, Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Creech, speaking for the Broncos Football Team, said the group has used Rotary Park for practices for years and were surprised by recent communication requiring a rental fee. Mr. Creech said the team is a nonprofit and that its receipts support the players; he disputed the claim that the organization had not sought permission in the past.
Council member Gorman spoke forcefully in the team's defense, saying the coaches "went above and beyond" for local children and adding, "they shouldn't have to pay anything." Mr. Mayo announced a Parks & Recreation workshop for Sept. 3 at the MLK Center; the council did not adopt a new policy or take a formal vote on the field-use dispute during this meeting.
