Councilmembers on Aug. 12 directed staff to invite Dollar General to present its plans for the long-vacant former Grant School property, after a councilmember summarized previous soil testing and remediation estimates.
Councilmember McManamon recapped a prior engineering report and core-drilling study and said the site would likely require excavation of roughly 17.5 feet of material to remediate contamination identified in earlier work. He said an estimate from three years prior put remediation at about $330,000 and that costs would likely be higher now. "I asked Jessica to be here as well so she could hear this," McManamon said, describing past core drilling and remediation discussion.
Council discussed whether to pursue negotiations, vacate property through the port authority or decline further engagement. Mr. Walker moved to invite Dollar General to present; Mr. McManamon seconded. Council approved the motion by roll call and scheduled an Economic Development Committee meeting for Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. to continue talks. Councilmembers cautioned that no sale or agreement has been made and that additional information from Dollar General is necessary before any decision.
