Compensation Commission approves higher pay for Fenton mayor and council effective Jan. 1, 2026

The Fenton Compensation Commission approved new pay rates for the mayor and council members at its Dec. 4 meeting, adopting a per-meeting rate of $105 and annual lump-sum payments of $1,500 for council members and $2,500 for the mayor, effective Jan. 1, 2026.
City Manager Lynn Markland presented a Michigan Municipal League (MML) compensation survey of similar communities, which commissioners used as a reference during their review. Commissioner Riggs moved the original compensation proposal and Commissioner Stickel seconded; the commission later amended the motion to round the lump sums to $1,500 and $2,500 respectively. The amended motion passed by roll call vote: Senyko, Stickel, Tebo and Riggs voted yes; Penwell was absent.
The commission also retained a maximum of 45 meetings per year for calculating pay. The final action sets both the per-meeting rate and the annual lump sums to be paid once per year beginning Jan. 1, 2026. No public comments were recorded on the item.
