The Dell Rapids Board of Equalization on March 16 heard appeals from property owners contesting assessed values and voted to keep the valuations for 609 Orleans Avenue, 405 East 5th Street and 910 East 8th Street unchanged.
Brian Graham, the appellant for 609 Orleans Avenue, told the board he relied on divorce-related appraisals dated October 24, 2020, and on realtor estimates that showed lower values. Graham said the property lacks sewer access, limiting development potential, and stated an appraisal figure “about $250,000.” The finance officer and members recommended that appellants first contact the Minnehaha County assessor’s office because county adjustments can persist on the property record and the director can overturn a local board decision. The council voted, by voice, to make “no change” to the assessed value for each appealed parcel.
The board noted that any decision made by the local board is effective for one year and encouraged property owners to present current, dated appraisals or income-and-expense documentation to the county if they seek additional adjustments. No formal numerical vote tally for each motion was recorded in the transcript beyond voice approval.
