District celebrates student champions, military staff and reports statewide gains on state report card

The meeting opened with multiple recognitions. Superintendent Willis and the board honored Pleasant Valley High School’s volleyball team and coach Jennifer Mann for a third consecutive 2A state championship; coach and players were invited forward for photos and applause. The band, directed by Jared Holland, was also recognized for state championships; Holland introduced student leaders and assistant staff. Willis additionally called out several current and former military-service employees by name and role.
In his superintendent's report, Willis highlighted the district's state report card results: Calhoun County’s overall score improved from 85 to 87 with gains in ELA and math proficiency, graduation rate, attendance and enrollment. Willis said the district was one of nine statewide to improve across the same set of indicators and the largest district (over 7,000 students) among those. Board members congratulated staff and students for the progress.
