School committee debates AI guidance; refers issue to superintendent and mayor for roundtable

Chief Information Officer Dr. McCann urged caution: "This is a very fast moving field... we need to be very thoughtful about the policies and that we need to be nimble enough to move and ebb and flow with the changes in AI," he said.
Several committee members (including Member Hudson) said the guidance lacked explicit protections for foundational skill instruction and requested clearer statements on academic integrity and staff usage. The committee voted to refer the matter to the superintendent and the mayor to convene a roundtable and working groups (internal and external) to socialize the guidance, build preparatory materials and solicit stakeholder input before any binding policy is drafted.
