Teachers and staff tell board shortages are stretching classroom capacity

Holly Merritt, an instructional coach in Round Mountain, said there are "holes in high school personnel" such as a Math opening and that teachers "have given up 8 weeks of prep time to teach and tutor students in Math." Alison Matulich, representing Mount Charleston Elementary School, said teachers there are "very exhausted and need more adult support to maintain student‑to‑adult ratios," and thanked the district for splitting a Tonopah kindergarten class and for special education purchases like lidded trash cans for diaper disposal.
Trustees heard these concerns in the context of staffing and the board’s PERS designation action to assist with recruitment for substitute roles.
