District says federal grants held at state; coalition distributed 1,000 backpacks at back-to-school event

Chief Operating Officer Ray Ritchie told trustees the district's federal funding requests are pending allocation by the state through the state's "E-Page" system; the district has submitted grant requests and is prepared to move forward when allocations are released.
Assistant Superintendent Genoveva Lopez-Angelo reported the NyE Communities Coalition-led Back-to-School event on July 26 distributed 1,000 filled backpacks districtwide (the event goal was 550). Lopez-Angelo said an additional 250 backpacks were distributed to students in Beatty, Gabbs, Round Mountain and Tonopah, and the Daughters of the American Revolution supplied backpacks for Amargosa students. The coalition plans a similar event July 25, 2026, in partnership with Valley Electric, Desert Valley Community and PDOP.
Trustees and staff treated the funding delay as an operational constraint pending state action, and they highlighted the community event as a significant volunteer-driven outreach success that supported students across multiple communities.
