MISD reviews hazardous walking routes after rezoning; board to consider resolution in May

The McKinney ISD administration presented an internal review of hazardous walking routes April 20 and told trustees it would return in May with a resolution to update the district hazard list tied to recent rezoning.
Assistant Superintendent Dennis Swamick explained state rules that make students who live two or more miles from campus eligible for district transportation, and said the board may designate routes within two miles as hazardous when sidewalks, crossing controls or other conditions are insufficient. He listed major corridors still treated as hazardous (US‑75/North Central Expressway, Highway 380/East University Drive, Highway 5/McDonald, and State Highway 121/Toll Road) and identified neighborhood sections being recommended for addition (segments of Virginia Parkway, McKinney Ranch Parkway area, portions near Trinity Falls) as well as segments recommended for discontinuation because sidewalks or rezoning now provide safe access.
Swamick said next steps include posting an interactive map, updating Durham’s bus eligibility checker and coordinating notifications for families affected by additions or removals. The administration will present a resolution and updated regulation for board action at the May meeting, and will work with city partners to add crossing guards where appropriate.
