Dr. Camille Whitaker, presenting the School Health Advisory Committee, told the board that SHAC is “a state‑mandated advisory committee for the health and well‑being of all school‑aged children,” composed of parents, community members, students and school staff to guide coordinated school health programs.
Whitaker said state law requires each district to establish a local SHAC so that “local community values are reflected in the district health education instruction,” and that the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the district. She referenced district policy BDF (legal) and said the committee must meet at least four times annually. Trustees asked for clarification about which listed members are parents and whether campus‑level committees remain required; Whitaker confirmed campuses keep internal committees in addition to the districtwide SHAC.
Trustees also discussed SHAC composition and proposed membership dates. One trustee questioned whether a listed community member who is a dentist counted as a parent representative; Whitaker identified the top‑listed members and explained how additional community members may be appointed. Trustees requested any final membership roster and meeting schedule be circulated before the committee convenes.
The board did not take formal action on SHAC membership at tonight’s meeting; staff said they would bring any appointments forward as needed.
