The Avon Civil Service Commission on Jan. 5 approved a Fire Lieutenant promotional exam to fill a newly opened officer position, Fire Chief David Swope told the commission.
Chief Swope said the department currently has 15 candidates eligible for the promotion and that the exam will be weighted 60% written test and 40% one-on-one assessment center. "Candidates have a minimum of 45 days to study," Swope said, and "candidates must pass the exam with a minimum combined score of 70%." Seniority credits will be added where applicable. Notices will be mailed and the posting will go on the station bulletin board immediately following the commission’s approval.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the exam (motion by Bill Greaney, seconded by Alan Wojciechowski). The chief also clarified that the last lieutenant promotional list was certified in May 2023 and expired in May 2025, so there is currently no active promotional list to abolish.
The commission’s approval allows the department to move forward with scheduling testing and compiling a ranked list for commission review.
