Shaker Heights City Council on April 27 approved an emergency ordinance to purchase five LifePak 35 cardiac monitoring devices from Stryker Corporation for $349,793.40, including a seven‑year maintenance agreement. Mayor Weiss introduced the item; Fire Chief Sweeney said the department’s existing five units are about 10 years old, out of warranty and increasingly difficult to service.
"They're really a critical piece of equipment for our rescue squads and our fire trucks," Chief Sweeney said, explaining the monitors guide paramedic treatment and can shorten time to definitive care in the cath lab. Finance and Safety & Public Works committees reviewed the item and, according to Chief Sweeney, unanimously supported moving it to council under an emergency suspension of the rules. Council members then moved and passed the suspension and final enactment by roll call vote.
