Commission approves early design for new Department of Safety headquarters and adds monument relocation to scope

Chuck Miller, presenting for the Department of General Services item for the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, described a four-story, 100,000-square-foot headquarters with roughly 25,000 square feet per level, approximately 700 parking spaces, public-facing services on the first floor, training rooms and a command center for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Miller said the building is designed for energy-performance glazing, brick accents and sustainable materials, and that the project is in budget and targeted to start construction in December or January 2026.
Miss Ann requested a modification to the requested action to explicitly include relocation of a monument to fallen officers; the commission incorporated that change into a single motion. The commission moved and unanimously approved the revised scope and early design-phase presentation. Miller said the monument currently at the existing site will be relocated to the new site as part of the project.
