Commission approves using Motorola to finish Tennessee Advanced Communications Network phase 3

Commissioner Jeff Long presented the Department of Safety's request to expand scope and funding for Phase 3 of the Tennessee Advanced Communications Network (TAN) to install communications towers and support facilities for first responders. Long said the department seeks to utilize Motorola to complete the final 120 to 130 towers in phase 3 and that the action would expedite project completion "in the interest of public safety." He referenced the urgency of the work and the symbolic significance of the date, saying, "if you will allow me, this is appropriate today, September 11. As we know."
When asked about schedule, Long said he had a commitment from Motorola's president and that the department expects to shorten an eight-year span to "a 3 to 4 years span. Hopefully, 3 years." The commission moved, seconded and Miss Ann announced unanimous approval of the revision in budget, funding and scope and authorization to use the previously selected contractor to perform the work.
