Commission approves scope revision, early design phase for Carwell Mountain visitor center

The commission approved a revision in scope that adds demolition of an existing barn and advanced the early design phase for a visitor center, maintenance facilities and park amenities at Carwell Mountain State Archaeological Park; the state architect received the early design on 2025-08-20 and construction is anticipated in spring 2026.
Commissioner David Salyers, presenting for the Department of Environment and Conservation, asked the commission to approve a revision in scope and the early design phase for a visitor center, maintenance facilities and park amenities at Carwell Mountain State Archaeological Park. Salyers said, "The revision in scope adds demolition of the existing barn, which is less than 50 years old and does not require review by the Tennessee Historical Commission." He also noted that the early design phase was presented to the state architect on 08/20/2025 and that the project was determined to be on schedule and in budget.
A motion to approve the revision and early design phase was made and seconded. Miss Ann called the roll and announced unanimous approval. The approved scope change specifically includes demolition of the identified barn and moves the project forward toward a construction start anticipated in spring 2026.
