University of Tennessee seeks approval to convert 120,000 sq. ft. former Walmart into recreation center

University of Tennessee president Randy Boyd told the commission the university plans to acquire and renovate a former 120,000-square-foot Walmart into a University Commons recreation and fitness facility. Boyd said the UT Foundation would acquire the building and the university would lease the space from the foundation as part of the transaction.
"This facility, formerly a 120,000 square foot Walmart, will be acquired by the UT Foundation, and UT will lease the space from the foundation," Boyd said. He estimated the project cost at $9,200,000 with $1,750,000 in current funding and requested SBC approval to proceed with designer selection.
The commission voted to approve the project and to allow the university to proceed with the designer selection process as presented.
