Tennessee State University engineering classroom approved; architects outline labs, maker space and 70,000 sq ft footprint

Executive Director Tracy (S9) introduced the Tennessee Board of Regents item. Architect Gary Askew (S8) described a new engineering classroom building to be sited on the former Clay Hall location, intended to house classrooms, labs, a machine shop, a maker space and faculty suites, with an engineering courtyard and bioswale for outdoor learning.
Askew said the building would be about "around 70,000 square foot" and that the team plans to proceed with design in November and complete construction in June 2027. During questioning, Will Radford (S10) said the project was programmed around 945 students with an expected 5% increase over five years; commissioners discussed how the design, phasing and industry partnerships could help TSU grow its engineering program.
Treasurer Lillard (S12) congratulated President Duane Tucker (S11) on his appointment; President Tucker said the university has hired new enrollment leadership to address recruitment. The commission moved, seconded and adopted the project funding and scope revision by voice vote.
