Commission approves planning request for new University of Tennessee College of Medicine building in Memphis

Associate Vice President Austin Oaks (introduced to the commission at SEG 103) asked the State Building Commission to approve proceeding with a selection process for a designer and to use the construction manager/general contractor alternate delivery method for a College of Medicine and interdisciplinary building in Memphis.
Oaks said the project is intended to support the MD program and noted it will "construct a new College of Medicine facility supporting more than 3,500 students." Speaker Sexton asked whether the new building would increase MD class sizes; Oaks said the program intends to increase the MD class from 175 to 225 and that the design team will be charged to study whether the building can be designed to allow easier future additions.
The commission moved, seconded and adopted the planning request by voice vote. Oaks said further analysis on expansion options will be part of the designer's charge once selected.
