Plano ISD AVID update: coordinator highlights program expansion, student outcomes

Kristen Anderson, AVID coordinator for Plano ISD, presented an AVID program update at the Nov. 18 meeting, outlining the program’s mission, models and recent outcomes.
"AVID is an acronym. It stands for advancement via individual determination," Anderson told trustees as she reviewed AVID’s rollout and models. Anderson said the district currently has 20 secondary AVID campuses and has expanded school‑wide AVID at elementary grades. She noted the AVID Excel pathway for long‑term English learners and described training and certification tools (the AVID CCI and SIT documents) that campuses use to monitor fidelity.
Anderson shared student outcomes from the prior year: a senior cohort of 269 students who received over $8,400,000 in scholarship and grant offers and a college persistence rate averaging about 89% across three years. She and board members discussed scaling school‑wide practices, training for principals and teachers, and training schedule options (February, summer and next fall). Board President Lauren Tyra thanked Anderson and praised the program’s school‑wide approach.
Trustees asked follow‑up questions about certification, principal training and how the district moves from elective models to a wall‑to‑wall approach; staff said they are prioritizing principal training and vertical alignment of college and career readiness skills across grade levels.
