Traffic safety at the 85/PJ Adams intersection was a recurring topic at the May 11 Crestview City Council meeting. Councilman Echols said patrols have helped but raised concerns that drivers run the red light or fail to observe lane controls, creating safety risks and backups. Resident Luis Rodriguez told the council that adjusting signal timing alone "is not gonna really help" because traffic flow from I‑10 and Eglin creates congestion; he urged caution about spending city funds on fixes that may not work and suggested widening the roadway rather than relying only on timing changes.
The city manager said the council had previously approved a red-light camera for that location but installation has been delayed while the contractor prioritizes school zone cameras. He added the county has agreed to reassess signal timing and that a county road-widening project—partially state-funded—would add about a third of a lane on the approach from Live Oak to PJ Adams. The manager cautioned that widening will not fully solve a bridge bottleneck but said staff will continue to coordinate with county engineering.
Separately, an unnamed resident raised concerns about drivers using a right-turn arrow lane near McDonald’s to go straight and urged clearer signing. Council members asked city and county staff to continue reviewing signal timing, signage and potential capital projects.
