The city manager told the council the speed-zone camera pilot in front of Riverside and Shoal River has produced 580 citations after three weeks of operation and recorded a high speed of 56 mph in a 25 mph zone during the school day. The manager said the program has not yet produced the hoped-for reduction in violations; the city is issuing warnings for one more week before tickets begin to be mailed.
"We are 3 weeks into the speed zone camera in front of Riverside and Shoal River and we are at 580 citations with the high speed so far being 56 miles an hour during the school day," the City Manager said. He noted the posted limit in that area is 25 mph and expressed concern about the high speeds recorded.
Council members asked clarifying questions; staff did not provide a detailed enforcement schedule beyond the remaining warning period noted in the briefing. No personnel or budget changes tied directly to the photo enforcement item were recorded during the meeting.
