Police report: staffing up, camera rollouts delayed; chief to seek K-9 funds from forfeitures

Police Chief McCosker told the council the department has sworn in four officers, has five additional recruits in the academy (finishing around June) and currently has two open positions it hopes to fill. "We had an inaugural 5K, the Lucky Dog Dash, with about 125 participants and the foundation raised about $3,400," McCosker said.
On enforcement technology, McCosker reported 847 warning-phase violations on Redstone during the camera's initial period and a year-to-date combined count of 672 violations at red-light and speed-camera locations. He said permitting and vendor problems delayed some installations and that the city is awaiting county and state permitting clarity. "As of today, the forfeiture funds state and federal are about $39,000," McCosker said; he told council he will request about half of those funds for a K-9, associated training and some allowable equipment.
