Calendar committee outlines two draft calendars, survey to close Jan. 29

Tiffany Taylor presented the calendar committee’s work and two draft academic calendars that are currently under survey.
Taylor explained state requirements the committee must meet — a minimum of 75,600 instructional minutes for students and 187 staff days — and noted the requirement to include at least two designated bad weather days. The committee includes roughly 40 people representing all 16 campuses and staff departments and about 11 parent representatives.
Draft A schedules staff to return Monday, Aug. 10 and students on Wednesday, Aug. 19; Draft B schedules staff on Thursday, Aug. 6 and students on Monday, Aug. 17. Draft B allows more true holidays (for example Presidents' Day and the Monday after Easter) while Draft A preserves a longer tradition of a Wednesday student start. Taylor said about 60 people had taken the survey at the time of the presentation, with about 55% identifying as parents and about 12% as staff-and-parent; Draft A was leading by roughly 51%.
The survey closes Jan. 29 at noon; the committee will meet that day to review results and, if necessary, reconvene Feb. 5. The committee plans to recommend a calendar draft to the board at the Feb. 18 meeting.
