Memorial High students make state debut at Academic Decathlon, coach credits underclass depth

Memorial High School’s Academic Decathlon team made an unexpected impact at the statewide meet in Corpus Christi, finishing with several individual medals and an improved score from regionals.
"They have shown us their amazing determination and flexibility," said Catherine Wright, Memorial’s academic decathlon coach, thanking the board for recognizing the students’ accomplishments. Wright said the team’s roster included many freshmen and sophomores and emphasized the program’s growth and potential for future seasons.
The coach listed team members (including Aiden Harrison, Alexis Shores and Adeline Bartlett) and noted that practice through difficult conditions — including regional events that went virtual during severe weather — helped the squad qualify for state. Board members applauded the students during the recognition.
The recognition night doubled as encouragement for the program to build momentum going into next year; Wright said the program’s early success sets a strong example for incoming competitors.
