Frenship High School senior Gunnar Claybrook won the SFA national championship in specialty crop production proficiency after advancing from district, area and state contests, board presenter Tiffany Taylor announced.
"On October 31, Gunnar took the national stage at the National FFA Convention to not only represent Friendship, but the entire state of Texas, and he brought home 1st place in specialty crop production proficiency," Tiffany Taylor said. Gunnar told the board his team won first place in the Lubbock district and will advance to the area contest in Canyon.
Taylor said Ag Texas Farm Credit Services presented a $2,000 check to the Friendship FFA to help cover travel and competition expenses to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. Angela Van Gundy, the chapter's FFA advisor and lead agriculture instructor, helped recognize Claybrook at the meeting and described his rapid growth in the program despite not coming from a traditional agricultural background.
The board praised the student's achievement and the community support behind the program. The recognition included details about how students who participate in FFA present on ag-policy topics—Claybrook described the Ag issues contest as an exercise in weighing pros and cons and answering judges' questions.
