Discussion of a Veterans Assistance Commission tabled after presentation from Post 1377 Auxiliary

Holly Clarke, president of Post 1377 Auxiliary, told the Board she has spoken to six veteran service organizations and that four of the six have pledged a delegate to a proposed Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC). Clarke said the VAC superintendent "should be someone who is local and cares about each individual and their case" and described the superintendent's role as a translator to help veterans submit federal claims and follow up on them.
Chairman Bernard Myers asked whether a tri-county commission was possible; Clarke said state-level work is underway but it could take two to three years. Jeff Rehkemper asked whether the superintendent must be a veteran and whether they must live in the county; Clarke said statutes require the superintendent to be a veteran but that counties may make residency mandatory "if they SO choose." County Clerk Meg Sybert said the county would be responsible for providing an office if the commission requires one. After discussion the Board tabled the Veterans Assistance Commission proposal (motion by Chris Timmermann, second Wes Pourchot; Roll Call: 5 ayes, 0 nays).
