Bond County Board tables Veterans Assistance Commission levy after debate over allocation

Several veterans attended the Oct. 1 Bond County Board meeting to express views on the proposed levy for the Veterans Assistance Commission. Commissioner Jeff Rehkemper said he was concerned that only a small percentage of the proposed levy would go directly to veterans and recommended tabling the item. Local veteran Tony Koonce urged passage, saying, "they can't deny it SO they might as well just pass it."
After discussion, the Board tabled the VAC levy on a motion by Jeff Rehkemper, seconded by Chris Timmermann; the motion passed on a 5-0 roll call. The tabled status means the Board did not adopt the levy at the Oct. 1 meeting and will revisit the matter at a later date, allowing time for more information on allocation to veterans and budget impacts.
